Augmentative and Alternative Communication Services

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) of Oakland Schools is inclusive in all forms of communication other than oral speech. AAC is utilized by students to express their thoughts, needs, wants and ideas. Individuals with complex speech or language challenges rely on AAC to supplement their existing speech or replace speech that is not functional.

The Oakland Schools and local district teams participate in a collaborative consideration process. Included is a feature match and implementation framework designed to explore and determine the most appropriate AAC system for each student’s communication needs.

A variety of opportunities are available to Oakland County School District teams including:

  • Short-term Problem-solving

  • Implementation Support

  • Professional Learning Opportunities

  • Lending Libraries

Local school districts may request AAC services through submission of the District Service Request (DSR), available through the district's office of special education.
